Long Key Natural Area and Nature Center is comprised of 164 gorgeous natural acres and its impressive live oak hammock once formed a part of a series of islands surrounded by Everglades marshland. One of the last remaining stands of live oak hammock in Broward County, the natural area serves as a habitat for interesting wildlife and rich vegetation. Some of the magnificent trees your guests will spot are live oaks, paradise trees, red bays, strangler figs, cabbage palms, and gumbo limbos. Your guests will be enchanted by the colors of the bromeliads and ferns that often cling to the trees. They will enjoy a leisurely stroll amongst the nature area’s extraordinary 14 acre orange grove, and absorb the stunning sights and sounds of the half-mile nature trail. They will delight in the majestic butterflies that flutter along the mile and a half equestrian trail where they might even spot such impressive mammals as bobcats or foxes taking refuge.
A visit is a glimpse into South Florida's past. The area was once inhabited by the ancient Tequesta and later Seminole tribes. It holds some of the most significant archaeological, historical, and ecological resources in Broward County. Learn about the area’s history inside the 2,390-square-foot Exhibit Hall. The hall highlights the history of the Tequesta and Seminole tribes. It features magnificent murals and captivating exhibits including a real archaeological dig pit; interactive, hands-on exhibits on vegetation, and birds; and even live animals, including a baby alligator, snakes, frogs, lizards, and scorpions. The center also features the Discovery Room classroom for educating groups about the Everglades, the 599 square foot Everglades Theatre featuring a fascinating 12 minute educational film about the Everglades, and the one-of a kind Island Garden. The 120-foot- by-88- foot Island Garden project features pathway mosaics which make reference to sedimentary layers; pools and planters which high-light the relationship between water and plants; and benches and a trellis system providing a place to experience shade and the coolness of water.
